Why this topic matters

Some questions on the real exam cover serious offences, and many of them come from this topic. A wrong answer on one of those costs five points instead of one, and two such mistakes mean an automatic fail, whatever your other answers score. Worth getting right.

Heavy fault · 5 points

At a level crossing with no barriers, the red lights are flashing. You cannot see or hear a train. What must you do?

  1. Wait — flashing red lights forbid you to go onto the crossing
  2. Cross, because there are no barriers to stop you
  3. Cross slowly after looking both ways

The answer

A — Wait — flashing red lights forbid you to go onto the crossing

Why

Flashing red lights at a level crossing forbid you to go onto it, whatever the barriers are doing. It is one of the three independent signals in article 20.3, and this is a fourth-degree offence — the most serious band in the decree.

Why not

  • B A crossing without barriers relies on the lights. They carry exactly the same prohibition.
  • C Looking for yourself does not replace the signal. A train can be out of sight and still seconds away.
